About the Event
Developed in post World War I Paris, the Surrealist movement quickly spread around the world.
In Latin America surrealism absorbed the pre-existing traditions of magic realism. Depicting dreams, ancestor spirits and the power of nature were already a part of Latin American art before exiled European artists arrived in the early 1940s. This lecture introduces Indigenous magic realism and explores how it morphed into a distinctive type of surrealism.
