About the Event
Women artists have often been misunderstood as secondary members of the surrealist movement. Re-examining surrealism shows us that women artists were an integral part of the movement. This talk introduces the work of women surrealists and how they shaped the influential International Exhibition of Surrealism that took place in London in 1937. We will see how these artists used surrealism to dismantle old-fashioned notions of sexuality and gender and contributed to the spread and wider development of the movement.
